KISSIMMEE, Fla., May 30, 11:45 am — As the tragic events of September 11 made clear, terrorists can strike anywhere and at any time. Without a doubt, the electric grid in the nation’s #1 tourist destination is our economic lifeblood, and thus, it is not inconceivable that its importance could make it a high-profile target for attacks.
To protect its employees and to assure the continuing reliability of electric service in Osceola County, the Board of Directors of the Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) has awarded a $223,000 contract to enhance security and surveillance capabilities at KUA’s two power plants, warehouse and fleet service operations area, and energy control center. The bid was awarded on Wednesday to NuTech Fire and Security, Inc. of Maitland.
KUA recognizes the serious nature of recent terrorist threats to power plant facilities nationwide. KUA’s Hansel and Cane Island power plants have been closed to the general public since September 11 and tours of all KUA facilities have been suspended indefinitely.
“KUA employees remain in a heightened state of alert and readiness,” said Chris Gent, KUA’s manager of corporate communications. “Our Board has directed us to take additional steps to safeguard critical utility infrastructure.”
In September, the utility established an internal task force to scrutinize security issues and policies, and resolve risks associated with potential threats. One of the action plans from this group was the recommendation sent to the KUA Board on Wednesday.
Although the security plan includes the purchase and installation of surveillance cameras, electronic perimeter fence sensors, and proximity card readers on all exterior doors, utility officials will not discuss details of its security measures. The new security features are scheduled to be in place within 60 days.
KUA is Florida’s 6th largest community-owned utility serving 58,000 electric, water and Internet customers in three Central Florida counties. KUA celebrated its 100th year of serving the community in 2001.
