KISSIMMEE, Fla., August 30, 2007 – Equipping children with the skills they need to safely navigate the Internet is the subject of a 30-minute talk show that will air on Radio Disney this Saturday, Sept. 1, featuring two Internet experts from Kissimmee-based KUA.net.
The show features Radio Disney kidcasters Brooke and Morgan interviewing KUA.net vice president of information technology Jef Gray and Internet systems coordinator Jason Borders.
The taped segment addresses topics involving the safe use of Internet blogs and social network sites like MySpace and Facebook. The program also provides important information on the use of passwords and the protection of personal information.
Recent studies show that teenagers author roughly half of all blogs today, with two out of three providing their age, three out of five revealing their location and contact information and one in five revealing their full name.
“It should go without saying that there are potential risks in sharing this type of detailed personal information,” said Gray. “KUA.net suggests you never offer any personal information including your last name, contact information, home address, phone numbers, school’s name or e-mail address.”
Gray offers these additional safety tips:
* Never post provocative pictures of yourself or anyone else, and be sure any images you provide do not reveal any of the previously mentioned information. Always remember to look at the background of a picture, too.
* Assume what you publish on the Web is permanent. Anyone on the Internet can easily print out a blog or save it to a computer.
* Avoid trying to “outdo” or compete with other bloggers.
* Keep blogs positive and don’t use them for slander or to attack others.
The interview is part of the weekly Kids’ Concerns Show that airs in Central Florida on Saturdays at 7:30 a.m. on WDYZ AM 990.
