KISSIMMEE, Fla., July 4, 2007 – Thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain on Wednesday forced the city of Kissimmee and Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) to cancel all Independence Day activities at Kissimmee Lakefront Park. The cancellations included the fireworks display Wednesday night.

The event was scheduled to feature live concerts by Eddie Money and Hotel California, but several inches of standing water in the park from afternoon storms created public safety concerns.

“We regret the cancellation and the inconvenience it created for many of our residents,” said KUA president and general manager Jim Welsh. “Our first concern was for the safety of those attending the event.”

City and utility officials will meet this week to discuss options for rescheduling the event or moving the fireworks to another upcoming event.

Founded in 1901, KUA (www.kua.com) is Florida’s sixth largest community-owned utility providing electric and telecommunication services to 170,000 residents in five Central Florida counties.
