Kissimmee, Fla., August 31, 9:30 am — Booming residential and commercial construction, rising temperatures and a growing population have resulted in a new peak usage record for Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA). The new record of 252.1 megawatts (MW) was set at 6:00 pm on Thursday, breaking the old mark of 250.1 MW set on July 20, 2000.

KUA moved record amounts of electricity on Thursday with no affect on normal service to customers. The utility’s generation and transmission systems performed well to meet the highest electrical demand ever reported on its system. Continued hot weather and high humidity are expected today and throughout the holiday weekend.

On a related note, the utility is just days away from assuming full commercial operation of its third generating unit at Cane Island Power Park. The new 250-megawatt generator is designed to serve the current and future electricity demands of the region.

KUA’s is Florida‘s 7th largest community-owned utility serving 53,000 electric, water and Internet customers in four Central Florida counties. KUA is celebrating its 100th year of serving the community in 2001.
