KISSIMMEE, Fla., February 7, 2013 – The Kissimmee Utility Authority board of directors on Wednesday awarded a $1.67 million contract to Black & Veatch for engineering and professional services related to the design of a new electric substation in downtown Kissimmee.

The $17.2 million substation, a Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) gas insulated design, will replace the utility’s existing Power Plant substation which was constructed in the 1970s. Unlike the open-air design of the current substation, much of the new substation and supporting equipment will be housed inside a building to minimize the visual impact.

The contract includes conceptual design, surveying, soil boring, architectural, detailed design, procurement and construction services for the new substation as well as decommissioning services for the current substation. The new substation is expected to begin service in April 2015.

The substation will serve downtown Kissimmee and its business district.

Founded in 1901, KUA (www.kua.com) is Florida’s sixth largest community-owned utility powering 64,000 customers in Osceola County, Fla.
