KISSIMMEE, Fla., August 20, 1:00 pm – Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) crews continue to restore power to customers across Osceola County. The utility has restored electric service to 49,000 customers capable of receiving power, or 84.5 percent of those who lost power when Hurricane Charley battered Florida one week ago today. As of 1:00 p.m. Friday, 9,000 KUA customers remain without power.
Customers who have experienced electrical damage to their home, such as to their weatherhead or meter base, should contact a licensed electrician to make the necessary repairs. Customers should contact KUA once those repairs have been made.
Because of catastrophic damage in several areas of KUA’s service territory, the following areas should not expect to have power restored until sometime next week:
– Hoagland Blvd. from Pershing Street to Airport Industrial Park
– Harbor Road
– Clay Street from Third Ave. to the intersection of Pleasant Hill Rd. and Hoagland Blvd.
– Areas around intersection of Clay St., Penfield, Clyde Ave.
– Oak St. from Park St. (east of railroad tracks) to Highway 192
– Austin Tindal Park and Great Oaks Blvd. areas
Customers in these areas as well as isolated outage areas around Osceola County may want to consider moving themselves and their families — especially those with special needs — to an alternate location during the extended outages.
KUA currently has five times the normal number of crews working to restore power in the aftermath of Hurricane Charley, including crews from Fort Pierce, Gainesville, Key West, Lakeland and Vero Beach as well as contractor crews from Southeast Power Corporation, Kohler, MasTec, MEAG Power and Overland Construction Services. Additional tree trimming crews were supplied by Asplundh and Wolf Tree.
Restoration efforts will continue throughout the weekend and all KUA employees will report to work on both Saturday and Sunday.
Founded in 1901, KUA (www.kua.com) is Florida’s sixth largest community-owned utility providing electric service to 58,000 customers in Osceola County.
