
KISSIMMEE, Fla., November 7,
1:30 pm – Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) announced today the winners of its tenth annual
calendar art contest for third, fourth and fifth grade Osceola County students.
The contest is part of an ongoing effort by the utility to increase awareness of energy
conservation and to encourage individual responsibility for the preservation of our natural
resources. A panel of “celebrity judges” selected twelve entries that will be featured in
KUA’s 2004 Calendar of Energy Conservation.
A total of 575 entries were received from 23 Osceola County elementary schools, including
public, private and charter schools. The artwork was judged by Osceola County’s 2003 Teacher
of the Year Danny Farmer, Central Florida radio host Doug Guetzloe, El Osceola Star editor
Bill Hansen, Osceola County School for the Arts assistant principal Jeannette Paul-Rivers,
and Osceola Center for the Arts executive director Kip Watson.
The winners are:
— Central Avenue Elementary – Destiny Daniels, grade 3
— Cypress Elementary – Atar Hajali, grade 5; Loysha Aviles, grade 5
— First United Methodist School – Austin Garcia, grade 3; Tyler Matthews, grade 3
— Life Academy – Lynnette Olivo, grade 4
— Mill Creek Elementary – Katherine Moya, grade 3
— Pleasant Hill Elementary – Brett Biller, grade 4; Noelia Guzman, grade 5
— Ross E. Jeffries Elementary – Amanda Robinson, grade 5
— Thacker Avenue Elementary – Arion Batson, grade 4
— Trinity Lutheran School – Matthew Somers, grade 5
Every student who submitted artwork to KUA will be honored with a letter of appreciation, a
copy of the full-color calendar and a chance to win four tickets to the Disney park of their
choice. The twelve winning students will receive a $75 cash prize and have their artwork
published in the 2004 calendar.
The 575 entries will be on display beginning December 1 in the lobby of KUA’s customer
service center. The printed calendars will be distributed free of charge in late December.
