KUA Wins 7 Statewide Public Relations Awards

KISSIMMEE, Fla., August 14, 2017 – Kissimmee Utility Authority won seven awards at the 2017 Golden Image Awards, an annual statewide competition sponsored by the Florida Public Relations Association. The winners were announced last week at the Association’s 79th annual conference in Orlando.

The competition recognizes companies and organizations that exhibit and employ comprehensive public relations projects that meet the highest standards of excellence in four components of public relations programming: research, planning, execution and evaluation.

KUA earned one of the competition’s biggest honors – a Grand Golden Image Award – as well as one Golden Image Award, three Awards of Distinction and two Judges’ Awards.

A Golden Image Award is presented to the top-scoring entry in each category. An Award of Distinction is presented to an entry that meets the standard of excellence set by a panel of judges. A Judges’ Award is presented to an entry that achieves maximum results while using a minimum amount of money. Golden Image Award winners in each division are automatically considered for a Grand Image Award, representing the finest examples of public relations programming in Florida.

In the printed tools category, KUA received the Grand Golden Image Award, an Image Award and a Judges’ Award for its 2016 Osceola Hurricane Handbook. The utility developed a comprehensive storm preparation guide to better prepare its customers for hurricane and summer storm season. The 70,000 guides were distributed to utility customers as a newspaper insert and distributed at a community storm preparedness expo — all at a cost of just 44 cents per utility customer.

In the annual report category, KUA received an Award of Distinction for its 2015 Annual Report. In 2016, the utility produced a report that featured stories about essential investments… investments in infrastructure, employees and the community. The report — titled “Gather ‘Round” — earned an 89.8 reader satisfaction rate.

In the news release category, KUA received an Award of Distinction for its cemetery balloon safety news release. After a metallic helium balloon broke free from a gravesite in Kissimmee and knocked out power to nearly 1,400 customers, the utility developed a news release to help raise customer awareness of balloon safety. The release garnered 1.2 million earned media impressions in broadcast stories and print publications, ranging from the Orlando Sentinel and Osceola News-Gazette to the New York Daily News and USA Today.

In the specialty items category, KUA received an Award of Distinction and a Judges’ Award for its “We’re Fans of Downtown Promotion.” In 2016, KUA sponsored a FAN-tastic economic growth summit in downtown Kissimmee to provide key stakeholders with updates on new and emerging projects – the “winds” of change for a growing downtown area. As a huge “fan” of downtown development, the utility created a “We’re Fans of Downtown” campaign and provided attendees with USB plug-in fans.

KUA has earned 319 local, state, national and international communication awards for public relations programs, special events, community relations and publications since 1995.
