KISSIMMEE, Fla., December 18, 2009 – Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) today named Luis Lopez its 2009 meter reader of the year.
Lopez was chosen from among the utility’s 24 full- and part-time meter readers for meter reading volume and accuracy as well as his attendance, dependability, leadership and time management during the past year.
Lopez read 95,794 electric, water and irrigation meters in 2009 with just 16 errors – a 99.98 percent accuracy rate.
Meter reader Jorge Urrea was named this year’s runner-up for reading 91,446 meters with an accuracy rate of 99.96 percent.
“In a typical year, a KUA meter reader walks nearly 2,000 miles in all weather conditions,” said Ricky Johnson, KUA’s manager of support services. “They frequently encounter dogs, snakes, spiders, bee hives and other potential hazards along their routes, which makes their reading accuracy that much more remarkable.”
KUA’s meter readers ended 2009 with nearly two million total meter reads with an accuracy rate of 99.93 percent.
Founded in 1901, KUA (www.kua.com) is Florida’s sixth largest community-owned utility providing electric and telecommunication services to 62,000 customers in Osceola County, Fla.
