KISSIMMEE, Fla., February 26, 2008 – A statewide power outage affected electric service in Kissimmee today and left nearly 7,600 customers without electricity.
At 1:09 p.m., KUA’s protection devices detected an under-frequency in electrical flow on its power lines and initiated an automatic load shedding program to protect both customer and utility infrastructure. The under-frequency also caused the largest generating unit at the utility’s Cane Island Power Park to trip offline.
Five distribution feeders, serving 7,577 customers, were affected. Among the areas impacted were portions of downtown Kissimmee, Buenaventura Lakes, the Lake Cecile Drive/Poinciana Blvd. area and John Young Parkway from Carroll Street south to Highway 192.
All power to KUA customers was restored at 1:29 p.m. Cane Island Unit 3 remains offline at this time.
Founded in 1901, KUA (www.kua.com) is Florida’s sixth largest community-owned utility providing electric and telecommunication services to 170,000 residents in five Central Florida counties.
