The holiday season is a time for warmth, joy, and celebration, but it can also be one of the most energy-demanding times of the year. Between the twinkling lights, festive meals, and holiday gatherings, it’s easy for your electric bill to climb a little higher this season.
To help you keep the holidays merry and energy-efficient, Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) offers these updated tips for 2025:
- Deck the Halls with LED Lights
Trade in your old incandescent holiday lights for LEDs. They use up to 80% less energy and last up to 25 times longer. Plus, they stay cooler to the touch, making them safer around kids, pets, and dry holiday greenery. - Use Smart Plugs and Timers
Don’t let your decorations shine all night long. Set outdoor and indoor lights on timers or smart plugs to automatically turn off during daylight hours or after bedtime. It’s an easy way to save energy without losing the festive glow. - Cook Smart and Share the Warmth
Your oven works overtime during the holidays. When possible, cook multiple dishes at once and avoid opening the oven door too often, it can drop the temperature by 25 degrees each time! If your oven’s already warm, skip the preheat for casseroles and roasts.
Bonus tip: Baking and roasting can help warm your home naturally, so lower your thermostat a few degrees while the oven’s on. - Mind the Thermostat
If you’re hosting guests, your home will naturally warm up from body heat and cooking. Set your thermostat between 68–70°F for comfort and savings. Consider a programmable or smart thermostat to automatically adjust temperatures while you’re asleep or away. - Let the Sunshine In
Open curtains or blinds during the day to let natural sunlight warm your home. At night, close them to help keep that warmth inside. - Choose Energy-Efficient Gifts
Looking for practical presents? Consider Energy Star–rated electronics or rechargeable batteries. These thoughtful choices help reduce waste and long-term energy use. - Unplug After the Party
Once the festivities wind down, unplug decorations, chargers, and small appliances. Even when turned off, many devices draw “phantom” power that can add up over time.
This holiday season, small energy-saving choices can make a big difference for your electric bill. From all of us at KUA, we wish you a bright, safe, and energy-smart holiday!
