While hurricane season runs June 1 through Nov. 30, its peak usually arrives halfway through the season in early September, with most hurricane activity occurring mid-August through mid-October.

The timing of last year’s late-season hurricanes demonstrates the fact that a hurricane can come at any point during the season. Hurricanes Ian and Nicole came nearly six weeks apart at the tail end of the 2022 hurricane season.

KUA released its 2023 Osceola Hurricane Handbook in June, and there are still plenty of copies available. The guide, in English and Spanish, is a comprehensive resource for Osceola County residents to help navigate storm season and take the necessary precautions ahead of time.

Customers can obtain a handbook at no cost in one of two ways:

  • Hard copies can be picked up in our lobby at 1701 W. Carroll St.
  • Visit kua.com/storm and download a free copy

The 2023 Osceola Hurricane Handbook is your one-stop shop for all issues relating to hurricanes, such as:

  • Disaster Supplies checklist
  • Power Outage Restoration
  • 2023 storm names
  • Generator Safety
  • Directory of police, fire, and hospital contact information
  • Information on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale
  • Evacuation Routes

Weather forecasters have predicted this year’s hurricane season will have 13 named storms, six hurricanes, and two major hurricanes, making it a below-average season. The development of El Niño will reduce the number of storms, experts predict, but the safest plan of action is to always prepare for the worst-case scenario.

We can’t be sure exactly how the remainder of the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane season will play out. But we believe that preparation and planning are key. The hurricane guide will help families develop a plan, build a kit, learn evacuation routes, and stay informed so they can act when necessary.

As you prepare, rest assured that KUA is prepared too. We have a team of nearly 300 highly skilled employees who have been trained to respond to severe weather at a moment’s notice.
