Many customers see KUA linemen after a storm, working to restore power and help our community recover. However, their work begins long before an outage occurs.
Every day, KUA linemen install, maintain, and repair the overhead and underground power lines and equipment that deliver electricity throughout Kissimmee. Their responsibilities include installing utility poles and transformers, inspecting equipment, replacing aging infrastructure, troubleshooting system issues, and responding to service interruptions.
They also perform routine maintenance and ensure their tools and equipment are properly inspected and ready to safely handle the demands of the job.
Whether they are completing scheduled work or responding to an emergency, KUA linemen share one common goal: keeping electricity flowing safely and reliably to the homes and businesses that depend on it.
A Job Built on Training and Safety
Keeping the lights on requires more than hard work; it requires years of training, technical knowledge, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to safety.
KUA linemen begin their careers as apprentices, working alongside experienced lineworkers while learning the skills needed to safely construct, maintain, and repair the electric system. Apprentices typically spend at least four years gaining hands-on experience before advancing to a lineman position.
Their training prepares them to work with complex electrical systems, including overhead and underground power lines, while following strict safety procedures.
Each year, KUA linemen also have the opportunity to participate in the Florida Lineman Competition and the APPA Lineman Rodeo, the annual premier events for public power lineworkers to showcase their skill, knowledge, teamwork, and dedication to the profession. The event challenges lineworkers through a series of competitive events designed to demonstrate the technical expertise, precision, and safety practices required to do the job. Beyond the competition, the Lineman Rodeo celebrates the craftsmanship and commitment of lineworkers who work every day to keep our communities powered.
