Today is National Arbor Day, a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. Before you start planting, here are some safety tips to consider:

  1. Call before you dig. Before digging, it’s important to be sure there isn’t a risk of any underground lines. To verify, call 8-1-1 before you start to make sure the area is safe.
  2. Watch where you plant.  If your tree exceeds 25 ft in height, plant them 40-60 feet away from power lines to avoid interference. Also, try to avoid planting near electrical equipment where there may be underground lines.
  3. Be sure to observe the ten-foot rule. Don’t attempt to work on trees that are within ten feet of any kind of overhead wires. This distance ensures you won’t touch any wires.
  4. Contact KUA for Tree Trimming. If you’re not looking to plant a tree and spot a tree that has grown into our infrastructure, fill out a tree trimming request here: http://kua.com/contact-information/tree-trimming-requests/. This work helps us prevent outages and downed lines while maintaining a high level of safety and reliability.
